Aspyr Media’s Macintosh version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock has gone gold master, and will hit retail stores beginning December 10, 2007. It will be appearing on store shelves as a hybrid Mac/PC bundle, for $79.99.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is a music rhythm video game developed by Neversoft and published by Activision. It is the third main installment in the Guitar Hero series. It took several years but the marketability of the popular console series Guitar Hero couldn’t go unnoticed by the PC side of gaming for very long and today Aspyr Media announced that it will be bringing Activision‘s Guitar Hero III to PC and Mac in time for the holiday season. Description: Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is the third music game in the Guitar Hero series. For the first time the game was released not only on consoles but on PCs. As in previous games, the player uses a special kind of controller that simulates a guitar. No longer content to be hooked up to your big screen HDTV and 7-channel surround sound system, Aspyr and Activision have announced that Guitar Hero III is rockin' on over to the more moderately.

Guitar Hero III is the latest edition of the popular music game that just recently began shipping for console systems at the end of October. This marks its debut on the Macintosh platform, and follows the PC version, also developed by Aspyr, by just a few weeks. Aspyr will be replacing the PC-only version now available in stores with a hybrid PC/Mac version instead. The game includes an “X-Plorer” USB guitar game controller, too.

In Guitar Hero III, you’re a struggling musician who’s trying to climb to the top by making deals with record producers, getting bigger and bigger gigs, sealing endorsement contracts and getting good reviews. You do so by playing music — covers of some of rock and roll’s most beloved songs. Using the bundled X-Plorer guitar controller, you tap out and strum the notes you see on the screen, in time with the music. Do it well enough and you’ll play great — do it poorly, and the crowds will boo and eventually you’ll tank.

As you play songs successfully, you’ll unlock new songs you can play — and Guitar Hero III has them a-plenty. You’ll get to play everything from “Anarchy in the U.K” by the Sex Pistols to “Even Flow” by Pearl Jam, “Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream, “Rock You Like a Hurricane” by The Scorpions, “Bulls on Parade” by Rage Against the Machine, and many more.

Guitar Hero III features more songs by the original artists than ever before, and even sports guest appearances by celebrities like Slash from Guns N Roses and Velvet Revolver, and Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine. The game has unlockable content, a multiplayer action-inspired battle mode, support for bass guitar if you want to play with a friend, online multiplayer game modes and more.

System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later, Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz or faster, 1GB RAM, 5.1GB hard disk space, ATI Radeon X1600 or Nvidia GeForce 7300 or better 3D graphics with 128MB VRAM (Intel graphics chipsets are not supported), DVD-ROM. The game doesn’t require the X-Plorer guitar controller, but it’s certainly more fun to play that way.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is a music rhythm game, the third main installment in the Guitar Hero series, and the fourth title overall. The game was published by Activision and distributed by RedOctane. It is the first game in the series to be developed by Neversoft after Activision's acquisition of RedOctane and MTV Games' purchase of Harmonix, the previous development studio for the series. The game was released worldwide for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 in October 2007, with Budcat Creations assisting Neversoft on developing the PlayStation 2 port and Vicarious Visions solely developing on the Wii port respectively. Aspyr Media published the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X versions of the game, releasing them later in 2007.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock retains the basic gameplay from previous games in the Guitar Hero series, where the player uses a guitar-shaped controller to simulate the playing of lead, bass, and rhythm guitar parts in rock songs by playing in time to scrolling notes on-screen. The game, in addition to existing single-player Career modes, includes a new Co-Op Career mode and competitive challenges that pit the player against in-game characters and other players. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is the first game in the series to include an online multiplayer feature, which is enabled in the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 versions. Initially the game offers over 70 songs, most of which are master tracks. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions feature the ability to download additional songs. The musicians Tom Morello (of the bands Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave) and Slash (of Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver) make appearances both as guitar battle opponents and playable characters in the game. The PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows versions also include Bret Michaels (of Poison) as a non-playable character.

Critics and fans acclaimed the game, but reviewers noted a difference in the game's style compared to previous installments, associating it with it being Neversoft's first development attempt with the series. The game is often cited to be too difficult, creating 'walls of notes' that are difficult to complete, and led to alterations in note placement for future games in the series. According to Activision, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is the best-selling video game of 2007, both in terms of units sold and revenue earned, and that it is the first single retail video game to exceed one billion dollars in sales. The company also claimed that it is the second-best selling video game title since 1995, following Wii Play, and is one of the best-selling third-party games available for the Wii.
